Hardwick Old Hall is, without question, one of the most innovative houses of the Tudor period. It was built between 1587 and 1596 by the renowned Bess of Hardwick, who was among the most formidable, richest and best-connected women of the Elizabethan age. The Old Hall is now a splendid shell, it is testament of Bess’s status and aspirations.
The ruins are supposedly haunted by the noted 17th century author and philosopher, Thomas Hobbes (5th April 1588 – 4th December 1679).
If ghosts are indeed real, Hobbes must be feeling a bit miffed, for he was of the opinion that ghosts were nothing but "the imaginary inhabitants of man's brain"!

The village runs along the old A617 road.
